1959 saw Porthcawl Lifeguard Club set up as the first volunteer lifesaving club in Wales. 2009 saw PLGC celebrating their 50th Anniversary in style - and 2010 promises to be the start of another historic era for the club!

With the promise of a warm sunny day on Wednesday 19th August, lots of holiday makers made their way down to Coney Beach to soak up the sun and have a splash in the sea – however, with strong rip currents and 3-4ft swells it was lucky for some that Porthcawl Lifeguards were on watch!

For many in south Wales, Porthcawl has been the place to go for the sea and beach and many people have close connections with the seaside town which recently lost one of its more colourful characters, Dai ‘Viking’ Thomas, who sadly died in June 2009.
